Ahmedabad (Gujarat), April 5, 2012: Two Jain monks are on a fast-unto-death in Palitana, a prominent Jain pilgrimage town of the state, demanding shutting down of the slaughter houses in the holy city. Maitriprabh Maharaj Saheb, one of the monks, has threatened self-immolation if the government does not take stern action against those who slaughter animals in and around the town.
Gordhan Zadafia, president of the Mahagujarat Janata Party (MJP) said the Jain monks, Maitriprabh Sagar Maharaj Saheb and Divyashekhar Vijay Maharaj Saheb, intend to go on an indefinite fast with a view to shutting down the slaughter houses in a 7-km periphery of the religious city.Zadafia said, “The government should take immediate action in this regard. Why is it mum on the issue? It needs to bring a law to stop the slaughter of animals in religious places as is done in Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.” – News Courtesy: DNA India
