Sawargaon, a prominent Jain heritage Centre in Osmanabad district, Maharashtra, boasts over 1100 years of rich history. It is home to the ancient temple of Tirthankar Parshwanath, constructed in the distinctive Hemadpanthi architectural style. This temple houses a 4.5-foot-high idol of Tirthankar Parshwanath in the Padmasana posture as the principal deity. Alongside, ancient idols of Tirthankars Suparshwanath, Aranath, Chandraprabhu (also known as Chandranath), and Neminath can also be found.
Architectural and Miraculous Features – The temple’s Hemadpanthi style, with its sky-high spire and intricate design, adds to its historical importance as an “Atishay Kshetra.” Legend holds that during Shrawan Sudi ekam to Panchami, snakes, scorpions, and other creatures shed their natural enmity and coexist peacefully, a phenomenon celebrated enthusiastically. The temple also features an ornate Sabha Mandapa with two impressive Manastambhas on either side.
The 4’ 3” high black idol of Lord Parshwanath in Padmasana, is believed to be miraculous. This idol, discovered over 200 years ago following a dream by a local Pandit named Bapudas, was hidden in the earth until it was recovered and reverenced in the temple. In V.S. 1983, Acharya Shanti Sagarji led a ceremony to apply a special coating on this principal deity.
Location and Accommodation – Sawargaon is situated 40 kilometers from Osmanabad. Visitors can find suitable accommodation in the Dharmashala nearby, which offers 14 rooms and 2 large halls.
Additional Idols and Sallekhana Site
In addition to the main deity, the temple houses idols of Tirthankars such as Bhagwan Adinath (reverenced in V.S. 1598), Suparshwanath, Aranath, Chandraprabhu, and Neminath. Sawargaon is also known as a sallekhana site for the Jain monk Aanandsagarji Maharaj, adding to its spiritual importance.
Annual Fair and Celebrations – Each year, the temple hosts a fair on the birthday of Lord Parshwanath, celebrated on Margshish 11, which attracts devotees from across the region.
