EDITORIAL
Many events in the caricature of life of man and path of religion yearmark the form
of progress and existence. In this connection festivals play a
major role in the celebration of the principles and doctrines of
religion. Some are ritualistic where as others are oriented towards
practicality of living in day-to-day life.
The month of
september is considered as the auspicious and consecrated one with the
deleberation of
the Dashalakshan Parva, also called as
Paryushanaparva. It is conducted for ten days aiming at adyatmik thinking and warding off entertainment and galore
unlike in the other Joyous festivals. This is a
period starting from Bhadrapad Shuddha Panchami to Chaturdasi. The
concept of athma is made obvious and thus leading to self purification
and enlightment of human values. A discourse will be held every day by
scholars and eminents in the religion on the topics such as clemency,
courtesy, simplicity, purity truthfulness, tolerance, penance,
sacrifice, selflessness and brahmacharya. These qualities are tenets of the
religion are mainly based on the " Tatwartha Sutra" the great
composition by Uma Swami. These also form the means by which one can mould
one's way of life and restore tranquility of mind and stability of
body leading psychosomatic equilibrium. The
celebration brings together the religious people to common dais to
practice the religion in its full perspectiveness. These principles of
Jainism are applicable to every human being irrespective of caste and
creed. Thus it concludes that humanity scores over community.
A pellucid sight on Dasha Lakshana Parva
is observed in Rathnakarandak Shravakachar by Acharya
Samanthabadhraji. It denotes that dharma entails the nature of
vasthu or article. One who practices the preachings of the
Dashalakshana Parva becomes entitled to get enshrined with Dharma.
Hence it is advised that everybody should indulge in practice of
the same to attain the eternal knowledge and vision and thus enjoying
the supremacy of birth.
Thanking you,
-Dr.
H.A.Parshwanath

JAIN EDICTS FOUND AT A TEMPLE IN GULBARGA |
Gulbarga, (Karnataka), July 31: The discovery of two 11th Century
Jain edicts at Jain Temple at Harsur in Gulbarga taluk has once again
proved that Gulbarga District was once an important centre of Jainism,
and that Jainism flourished under the Kalyan Chalukyan kings. The
edicts were discovered by the noted historian and researcher, D.N.
Akki, during one of his visits to the "Jain Basadis" (temples). One of
the edicts is 51 inches high and 16 inches wide, and has a beautiful
figure of the 23rd Theerthankara Parshwanath carved on it. A
five-headed serpent is in the background of the Theerthankara. Mr.
Akki, who has made important discoveries in the district, including
plaques and sculptures, said here on Tuesday that the edict had the
sun and the moon carved on the right side, below the figure of the
Theerthankara. A figure of cattle and a sword was also finely carved,
he added. The noted epigrapher, Seetharam Jagirdar, who deciphered the
inscriptions in Sanskrit, says that one of the inscriptions dates back
to 1088 AD and another to 1090 AD. Only the top 10 lines of the edict
were legible, and time has erased the rest of it. The inscriptions
clearly mention the Sixth Vikramadiyta Trubhuvan Malla in both the
edicts, which speak of the donations made by the people and the
royalty at that time. The edicts also recall the heredity of the
Kalyan Chalukyan Kings, and speak about some of the then chieftains
and their families, written in the prose form in Sanskrit. -

PRESERVING THE LIFE OF THE SACRED COW |
New Delhi, August 13: Established
in August, 2001, the National Commission for Cattle has recently
submitted a 1,500-page report to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
advocating that cow slaughter be put to a stop in India. Presently,
beef forms part of many peoples' diet and is a lucrative export
product along with cow leather. Statistically, India has 200 million
cattle. Ghuman Mal Lodha, acting chairman of the commission, says,
"India is 85% Hindu. Killing cattle is worse than killing human beings
as the animals cannot defend themselves." In the 1,500-page report,
Lodha has recommended 51 different solutions such as, "Prohibition of
slaughter of the cow and its progeny should be made a fundamental
right, and a Central Cattle Protection Rapid Task Force should be set
up with offices in each state." - Jain

feet swelling up with pain and itching," he said adding, "I keep
standing on either foot alternatively through the day and night. And
to rest, I place my hands on a swing-like contraption or lean on a
pole behind me. The swing also serves as support to sleep." He prefers

PUBLIC APPEALS TO GOVERNMENT TO BAN ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN TEMPLES |
Chennai, (Tamil Nadu), August 11:
Despite strict government regulations and a public interest petition
appealing to the government to put a stop to animal and bird
sacrifice, it stills continues at some temples in the state. However,
a recent order by the Madras High Court to the Home Secretary and the
DGP to enforce the Tamil Nadu Animals and Birds Sacrifice Prohibition
Act 1957, in all temples in Tamil Nadu, may curb the practice. To
date, the DGP has not initiated any action against violators of the
act. Mr. A V Krishna Moosad of Trivandrums says, "I am praying for an
interim injunction restraining the authorities from permitting or
giving license to persons intending to give animal or bird sacrifice
in temples in violation of these provisions."

MAHARASHTRA TRIES SPIRITUALITY TO REDUCE ADDICTION |
Mumbai, July 16:
Having failed in its endeavor to reduce addiction to liquor and
tobacco-related products through its various programs, the Prohibition
Department of the Maharashtra government has now turned to
spirituality. The minister concerned, Dr Dashrath Bhande, has directed
the district collectors to seek the help of kirtankars and
provachankars (those who deliver spiritual discourses through sermons
or songs) to popularize de-addiction throughout the state. These
de-addiction ambassadors will be given numerous benefits including
free travel by the state transport buses for the said purpose. In
addition, their efforts will be lauded through block, district and
state-level annual awards which includes a citation and US4 in cash.
''The state has spent a lot of money implementing numerous
de-addiction programs but cannot create the right impact. In contrast,
mere words uttered by them become an aadesh (order) for the addicts,''
said Dr Bhande. ''Their sabhas attract more people than our rallies.
Today, all forms of addiction in the state stand at an estimated 70%.
This is extremely alarming. After due thought I feel that state
policy, however strict, will not help. Only spirituality will,"
admitted the minister. -
